l What is an oil spill? l How do oil get spilled? l Damage to the environment l Effects on wildlife l Cleaning up the environment Outline
3
What is an oil spill? l An accidental or intentional release of oil into natural environments l Oil spills can cause large amount damage to the environment l Extremely difficult to clean up
4
How do oil get spilled? Things such as oil transportation accidents release large amounts of oil Small oil spills occur constantly in United States Over 90% of the oil spills were less than 100 gallons Only about 1% were 100,000 about gallons or more
5
Amount of damage done to the environment? l Damage done by oil spills depends on the type of oil and the environment l For example, 5,000 gallons of jet fuel can do more damage than 40,000 gallons of crude oil l Also, oil in a small, trapped area can be more lethal than oil in an open place
6
Effects on Wildlife l Oil spill accidents had devastating effects on the wildlife l Animals that drink the water swallowed oil and died l Some animals were suffocated by the oil
8
l Containment and Recovery –Contain the oil in booms, and use vacuum skimmers to suck in the oil l Dispersal –Uses chemical to disperse the oil into smaller pieces l Bio-remediation –Adds microbes and fertilizers to speed up the nature’s process of cleaning up l Burning Four Methods to Clean up
9
Reducing Risks l By adding an extra layer of hull to tankers, there would be less risk of oil spills –The money for cleanup operations made double hulling tankers seem small l Another way is to conserve fuel –By reducing the use for fuel, there would be less drilling, shipping, and less spill
10
Summary l Oil spill is a release of oil into the environment l Oil gets spilled in many ways, such as transportation accidents l Damage can depend on many factors l It could also have deadly effects on wildlife l Conserving fuel would help l There are ways to clean up, but none of them are easy
