Globalization means countries are increasingly interdependent International alliances formed to enhance economic power, trade and security The UN acts as an umbrella organization with many agencies that set international policies and promote environmental, social well-being and security (peace keeping) - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights - Law of the Sea Convention

The UN formed in 1945 (replaced The League of Nations) Today there are 193 “member states” There are 5 permanent members of the Security Council: ChinaRussia FranceUnited Kingdom USA

The UN arguably has the largest role in global poverty reduction Coordinates NGOs, IGOs, Govt’s, TNCs and locals They have identified 3 strategies to reduce poverty: 1) Improve economic development 2) Create equitable distribution of wealth 3) Address problems of social development
