VINES & LOW GROWING GROUNDCOVERS: OVERLOOKED RESTORATION TECHNIQUES

THESE METHODS ARE DAVE DERRICK DISCOVERIES (DDD)

SITE 2-A: BANK STABILIZATION TO PROTECT STATE HIGHWAY RT. 209, BUSHKILL, PA. DELAWARE WATER GAP NATIONAL RECREATION AREA NATIONAL PARK SERVICE PROJECT CONSTRUCTED SEPTEMBER 14-26, 2009

WILDLIFE ON SITE !! His twin had just crossed. Derrick scared this one by yelling “BEAR”... CONSTRUCTION BUSHKILL CR-SITE 2-A PIX BY DERRICK 9-18-2009

VINES – THE OVERLOOKED RESTORATION TECHNIQUE Use vines for aesthetics, habitat, & temperature mitigation (reduction in thermal heat transfer from stone structures). For this project a 9 inch long cutting of Virginia Creeper was planted every 5 ft along the top of an existing stone wall.

1 YEAR LATER-Looking @ BW #7 & great first year growth of Virginia Creeper on stacked stone wall. 1 YEAR LATER-BUSHKILL CR-SITE 2-A - DERRICK 9-12-2010

1 YEAR LATER-Looking DS @ planted Virginia Creeper vines on stacked stone wall. Great vine growth for first year 1 YEAR LATER-BUSHKILL CR-SITE 2-A - DERRICK 9-12-2010

1 YEAR LATER-Close-up of vines on stone wall. 1 YEAR LATER-BUSHKILL CR-SITE 2-A - DERRICK 9-12-2010

CHAUTAUQUA CREEK ICE DAMAGE REDUCTION PROJECT –Near its mouth @ Lake Erie WESTFIELD, NY  Severe scour from ice and high flow velocities on the right descending bank had resulted in an overwidened section of stream.  Catskill Sand Cherry planted 3 years ago  Under water & under ice every winter.  Some examples growing 12 to 14 ft above base flow water surface elevation  Needs full sun

Catskill Sand Cherry growing well, covered with ice all winter, growing 12-14 ft above base flow. 3 YEARS AFTER PLANTING-CHAUTAUQUA CR.-JOE GALATI 5-31-2011

Mid & Upper bank vegetation growing well Pix by Derrick - 8/23/2006 TreesNo protection, 2 rows of shrubs Riprap with grasses Square cut stone with willow & dogwood whips Sheetpile

Vines & some veg growing amongst large toe stone 3YRS 1 MONTH AFTER-CAZENOVIA CR. @ STEVENSON ST-DERRICK 6-12-09

3 YEARS & 1 MONTH AFTER PROJECT COMPLETION Photos By Derrick JUNE 12, 2009

Looking DS @ left bank. Nice species diversity of plants. 3YRS 1 MONTH AFTER-CAZENOVIA CR. @ STEVENSON ST-DERRICK 6-12-09

Close up of robust mid & upper bank veg. 3YRS 1 MONTH AFTER-CAZENOVIA CR. @ STEVENSON ST-DERRICK 6-12-09

4.66 YEARS AFTER PROJECT COMPLETION Photos by Derrick JUNE 16, 2010

4.66 YRS LATER-CAZENOVIA CR. @ STEVENSON ST-DERRICK 6-16-2010 4.66 years after completion. From the bridge looking DS. Except for narrow band of stone at toe, dense veg has covered the entire bank.

4.66 YRS LATER-CAZENOVIA CR. @ STEVENSON ST-DERRICK 6-16-2010 4.66 years after completion. From the bridge looking DS. Good diversity of plant species with some volunteer plants (Cottonwood, Black Locust, herbacious, some invasive Japanese Knotweed).

4.66 YRS LATER-CAZENOVIA CR. @ STEVENSON ST-DERRICK 6-16-2010 4.66 years after completion. From the bank looking DS. Willow is growing well in the riprap section.

4.66 YRS LATER-CAZENOVIA CR. @ STEVENSON ST-DERRICK 6-16-2010 4.66 years after completion. Looking at top bank.

5 YEARS AFTER PROJECT COMPLETION Photos by Chuck Godfrey Feb. 18, 2011

5 YRS LATER-CAZ CR. @ STEVENSON ST-CHUCK GODFREY 2-28-2011 5 YEARS AFTER PROJECT COMPLETION. Ice is back!! DOT closed the bridge for 2 days, concrete channel UGLY but OK.

5 YRS LATER-CAZ CR. @ STEVENSON ST-CHUCK GODFREY 2-28-2011 5 YEARS AFTER PROJECT COMPLETION. Ice flowing around plants & pounding project, plants look OK!!!
