11 Hawaii 5210 Let’s Go! Healthy Schools Water Project ■Problem: –Children are developing severe obesity and obesity related chronic illnesses especially prediabetes. Dental caries are common. Hawaii’s children have very high rates of dental caries. –Sugary beverages are number one source of sugar in diet of Americans including children ■Goals: Increase the amount of water kids are drinking and decrease consumption of sugary beverages ■Target: Initiatives that change policy and built environment have the greatest chance of changing behaviors ■Focus: Castle/Kahuku Complex and Waianae Nanakuli Complex ■Partners: CK Complex Wellness Teams, CK Schools, DOE Facilities, Kaiser Permanente, Kokua Hawaii Foundation, HMSA

12 Kaneohe Elementary School October 27, 2015 ■Water Bottle Filling Stations –School Wellness Committee –Health Beverage policy –Educate kids/families about sugary beverages and promote healthy beverage consumption, especially water –Complete pre/post evaluation – aligns with DOH Assessments
