1
Binary Compounds Molecules (covalent bonds) Contain only two elements Contain H and nonmetals Don’t contain ions or metals
2
Naming Binary Cpds Use entire name of first element in formula Change name of 2 nd element to –ide ending Use prefixes to show # of each element EX: PH 3 SiH 4 H 2 O
3
Binary Acids vs. Oxyacids Acids = H + ions in solution (H is first) Binary acid = hydrogen + one element Oxyacid = hydrogen + oxyanion Examples: –HCl –H 3 N –HNO 3 –HNO 2
4
Naming Acids Binary acid = hydro + element’s name with –ic ending Oxyacid = find polyatomic ion’s name if it ends in –ate change to –ic acid if it ends in –ite, change to –ous acid Examples: –HCl –H 3 N –HNO 3 –HClO 2
5
Quick Check Draw the Lewis structure for the following: OCl 2 GeO 2 –Name the structures you drew. –Name the following acids: H 3 PO 4 HBrO 3
