1 Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata
MAMMALS! Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata

2 Mammal Characteristics:
Mammary Glands: Females make milk for their young. Breathe air Sexual reproduction Endothermic Have hair Specialized teeth Large brains

3 Types of Mammals Placental Mammals: have live births
Monotremes: lay eggs Marsupials: have pouches for fetal development

4 I. Placental Mammals Characteristics:
Embryo develops inside the mother Live birth VOCAB. > Gestation: Time period during which the zygote is inside the mother.

5 Types of Placental Mammals Anteaters, Armadillos, Sloths
Characteristics: Toothless: Anteaters don’t have teeth! Eat insects with long, sticky tongues. Have unique backbone – special connections between vertebrae.

6 Placental Mammals (cont’d) Rabbits, Hares, Pikas
Characteristics: Similar to rodents Tail is shorter than a rodent’s tail Sharp, gnawing teeth

7 Placental Mammals (cont’d) Insectivores: Mole, Shrew, Hedgehog
Characteristics Long pointy noses Small brain Simple teeth Eat insects; some eat small mammals

8 Placental Mammals (cont’d) Rodents
Characteristics Sensitive whiskers Gnawing & chewing wear down their teeth Live on every continent except Antarctica Examples: Rats, mice, guinea pigs, porcupines, chinchillas

9 Placental Mammals (cont’d) Flying Mammals: Bats
Characteristics Nocturnal Eat insects and other mammals Use echolocation for flight navigation and to find food Examples: Fruit bats, spotted bats, vampire bats

10 Placental Mammals (cont’d) Carnivores
Characteristics Meat eaters Canine teeth Teeth for slicing meat Examples: Cats, coyotes, bears, walruses, seals, otters

11 Placental Mammals (cont’d) Trunk Nosed - Elephants
Characteristics The elephant is the only mammal with a trunk. Trunk : upper lip and nose Use trunk for grasping, food gathering, and spraying water

12 Placental Mammals (cont’d) Hoofed Mammals
Characteristics Thick, hard pad covers the toe Large, flat molars for grinding plant material Fast runners Examples: Horses, cows, pigs, deer, giraffes, camels, tapirs, rhinoceroses

13 Placental Mammals (cont’d) Cetaceans: Whales, Dolphins, Porpoises
Characteristics Live in water Have lungs Nurse young Use echolocation

14 Placental Mammals (cont’d) Manatees and Dugongs
Characteristics Live along coastlines and in rivers Swim slowly using front flippers and tail Eat seaweed and plants Have lungs; lift noses out of water to breathe air

15 Placental Mammals (cont’d) Primates
Characteristics 5 fingers/toes with opposable thumbs for holding objects Larger brain; intelligent Forward facing eyes to focus on one visual subject Examples: Apes, monkeys, lemurs, aye aye, humans

16 II. Monotremes Platypus and Echidnas
Characteristics Lay eggs Endothermic Have hair Babies do not suckle but rather lick milk from the skin around the mother’s mammary gland.

17 III. Marsupials Kangaroos, Koalas, Possums
Characteristics Newborns complete their development in mother’s pouch and later may “ride” in the pouch.
