Find Points on a Grid By Mr. Bales
3
Objective By the end of the lesson, you will be able to use ordered pairs to find and name points on a grid. Standard 4MG2.1 - Students will draw the points corresponding to linear relationships on graph paper (e.g., draw 10 points on the graph of the equation y=3x and connect them by using a straight line.
4
Introduce 0 10 9 8 7 4 1 3 2 6 5 12 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 The map gives the locations of several students’ homes and their school. From the school, Ty lives 5 units right and 3 units up. This is written as (5, 3).
5
Teach The map just shown is an example of a coordinate plane. A coordinate plane is formed when two number lines intersect at their zero points. The lines are perpendicular.
6
0 10 9 8 7 4 1 3 2 6 5 12 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 The vertical line is the y-axis. The horizontal line is the x-axis. The ordered pair (0, 0) is the origin.
7
Ordered Pair The point (5, 3) is an example of an ordered pair. The numbers in an ordered pair are called coordinates. The coordinates give the location of the point. (5, 3) x-coordinate y-coordinate
8
0 10 9 8 7 4 1 3 2 6 5 12 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 What ordered pair gives the location for the library? What is located at (7,1)? What direction do you move from zero to find the first number in the ordered pair? What direction do you move from the first number to find the second number in an ordered pair ?
