1 Recording a Deliberative Forum on Flipcharts (Notebook section 5)
2
2 Benefits of Recording Keeps group on task. Tracks the forum’s progress. Provides a record of points made. Reinforces that comments are being heard. Can be a tool to get balanced views. Helps the convener, moderator, and recorder with the post-forum report.
3
3 Cautions about Recording Can focus on the moderator rather than encourage forum participants to address each other. Can slow down the conversation and/or discourage spontaneous interchange. Recorders learn how to minimize these concerns
4
4 Record or Not Record Depends on: –Purpose of the forum –Number of participants –Availability of a qualified recorder –Size of the room / will the recording be visible? Not mandatory to record every forum, but the benefits usually make it worthwhile.
5
5 Styles of Recording Quantity of comments recorded: –Record only those comments that reflect deliberation – not verbatim. –Record every comment. Organization of the comments: –Organize by the type of comment (ex. appeals, concerns, tradeoffs, etc.) –Straight recording

6 Strategies for Recording Read the issue book. Meet with the moderator. –How to be introduced –Responsibility for supplies and equipment. –Transcription / recorder’s role in reporting Prepare flipcharts in advance. Arrive early and set up. Record the deliberation and reflections. Approach the job quietly. Follow through with post-forum responsibilities. [Optional: use a “listener”.]
