4 What was the Great Depression?  The Great Depression began on "Black Tuesday" with the Wall Street Crash in October 1929 and rapidly spread worldwide.  The market crash marked the beginning of a decade of high unemployment, poverty, low profits, deflation, plunging farm incomes, and lost opportunities for economic growth and personal advancement.

8 Franklin Roosevelt and The New Deal In 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt became the president of the United State. FDR came up with a New Deal policy to help get America out of the Great Depression. Some programs created under the New Deal are still around today: Social Security, National Recovery Administration, and Securities and Exchange Commissions.
