Defining Pronouns “Tell her what he said earlier.” “Let him know he needs to hand it to me right now.” “I owe you, because of that thing with the guy in the place.”

Pointing In hearing culture, pointing is rude. In Deaf culture, pointing is a pronoun.

Deixis Deixis: to refer to someone or something by pointing to it.

How to Use Deixis When possible, point to the real object or person. If the object or person isn’t present, state what it is and establish a space for them. Then you can continue to point to that space.

Vocabulary I, me You, You (plural) He, she, it They (plural) We, us

Closing signal Use deixis again at the end of a sentence when: Making a statement about yourself or someone else. Asking a question
