PSYCHOLOGY vs. PSYCHIATRY Completes the equivalent of 4 years of full-time study and an additional two years (post-graduate study or training) Completes 6 years of university study and training to gain basic medical qualifications as a doctor Work a further 12 months intern in a general hospital Complete at least 1 further year as a Resident Medical Officer Post-graduate training takes a further 5 years TOTAL = 13 years study PSYCHOLOGYPSYCHIATRY

PSYCHOLOGY vs. PSYCHIATRY Do not have any legal authority to hospitalise someone who has a serious mental illness and who will not agree to being hospitalised Some psychiatrists have the legal authority to hospitalise involuntary patients (dependent on state or territory legislation) PSYCHOLOGYPSYCHIATRY
