Look at this word and listen to me read it out loud. As I read, think about how many syllables are in the word and where the word should be divided. Decide which syllable has the / Ə n / sound nation na/tion Notice that the second syllable- tion has the / Ə n / sound

Did you notice that the vowel sound in the final syllable of both words was neither long nor short. This vowel sound is called the schwa. Notice that the / Ə n / can be spelled in different ways.
