Compass Rose Basics ► Most maps and charts are oriented to North Either magnetic north, where your compass looks Or True north, where the North Pole ACTUALLY IS! ► The cardinal headings spell NEWS (sort of) They are 90 apart ► Inter-Cardinal headings (NE, SE, SW & NW) split the circle into 8 sections and are between the cardinal headings They “bisect” the cardinal angles (@ 45 )

Compass Rose Basics ► The compass rose counts 0 to 360 through all of the degrees of a circle N: 000 E: 090 S: 180 W: 270 and … N: 360 (yep, again.)

Four Points of Compass Anatomy ► The Base Point the arrow (or long end) away from you for navigation Provides map reading helpers (parallel lines) for map track alignment ► Rotating Bezel Provides the “Compass Bearing” readout around its face Turns the Shed N S E W

Four Points of Compass Anatomy ► Needle North (el Norte…) is, “the Reddest End” ► Lanyard Attach it to you securely. This TOOL is your best friend when tumbling head-over- heels down a hillside N S E W

Let’s Put FRED in the Shed !!! ► Let’s set a course of travel… Due East ► First ROTATE the Bezel East should be at the arrow end ► Assume tracking posture Compass in hand, Hand against your belly, Lanyard taught above waist high N S E W

Let’s Put FRED in the Shed !!! ► Rotate yourself and Put the reddest end of the needle in the shed ► Holding the reddest end of the needle “FRED” in the outlined arrow “the Shed” Will keep you on an Easterly track indefinitely N S E W

Practice Setting a Track or Two ► Set-up a Westerly (due West) track ► Set-up a Southwesterly (225 ) track ► Set-up a Northeasterly (045 ) track ► Set-up a Southerly (due South) track
