5

7
Invest in your future Getting a job in a hard economic climate? Getting to college in a hard economic climate? Getting to university in a hard economic climate? Qualifications Personal and social skills Positive attitude and commitment 01/02/20166
8
Poor S4 results last year – why? Too many stopped caring about themselves and their future Too many stopped believing that if they worked they could do better Let’s not make the same mistake this year Still time to make the change 01/02/20167
9
8 Which group were you in? 1 - Hard work, high attainers 2 - Hard work, achieving targets 3 - Not working enough, disappointed 4 - Not working enough, but it’ll be OK 5 - Couldn’t care less

Common mistakes at S3 exams Did little revision – 3 hours for 100 hours subject teaching June S2- March S3 Can cope with topic tests but not revising the whole course Falling down on knowledge and understanding element Not answering all the questions Not going over your answers 01/02/201610

13
Optimism, realism, achievement S3 – this is what you can get if you work hard on the basis of what we have seen so far S4 prelim – this is what you have achieved to the standard of exam you’ll get in May SQA estimates in March – this is what we think you will get in May based on prelims and class BUT - What factors cause pupils to fail to make their target grade in May of S4? 01/02/201612
14
What to do now Still expect homework from you – need to get through the course Make a Revision Plan and stick to it 12 working days to go plus weekends = 18 Learn it now and it’s easier in May Get all your subject work in one place Look at past papers 01/02/201613
15
Why work now? Everyone is on your back to do better It’s harder to get into good work habits later on – do it now The gaps in your knowledge become bigger and really affect you in S5 when the pace is faster and the standard higher It’s now a national exam - pupils elsewhere believe in themselves and care 01/02/201614
16
Realism Poor results, leave in May 12 – hard to get into job market or training or college, even more so.. Mediocre results – stay on to try to get better grades in S5 but lost good working habits Indifferent results – don’t get Credit grades and can’t get into Higher classes you want But solid passes at prelim and May – confidence in returning for the next stage of learning 01/02/201615
17
Springboard to success Attendance as a means to success Active learning in classes – get involved Coursework and homework Work first, play later attitude Revise regularly each week, not just at the end of a topic or for an exam – it sticks! Supportive staff – use them – we believe in you 01/02/201616
18
Health and wellbeing Sleep Good diet Exercise Plan ahead Being prepared gives you confidence “I gave it my best shot” Get it right first time or learn from your mistakes 01/02/201617
