1
Only the beginning, only just the start… Creation Creation of man The Fall The Flood The Tower of Babel Genesis 1-11 The story of the lives of four men Genesis 12-50
2
The purpose of the Bible To explain God’s attempt to establish His kingdom on earth.
3
Genesis – the Purpose To explain Israel’s beginning and purpose in the establishment of God’s rule on earth.
4
Genesis – The Structure Genesis is divided by markers in different sections, each highlighted by a certain Hebrew word.
5
Genesis – The Structure This word can be translated with the phrase, “What became of…”
6
Genesis – The Structure – 2:4-4:26 We have looked at “What ever became of the heavens and the earth?” and “What ever became of Adam?”
7
Genesis – The Structure – 5:1-6:8 We have seen that, in spite of sin, mankind made progress and prospered…
8
Genesis – The Structure – 5:1-6:8 …and died. As sin spreads, so does the curse of death.
9
Genesis – The Structure – 6:9-8:22 We now begin the fourth major section of Genesis; “What ever became of Noah?”
10
Genesis – The Outline I.Early Events (1:1-11:26) A. Creation of the Heavens and the Earth (1:1-2:3) B. What became of the heavens and the earth (2:4-4:26) C. What became of Adam (5:1-6:8) D. What became of Noah (6:9-9:29) 1. The judgment of mankind by the flood (6:9-8:22) 2. The covenant to Noah about life and nature (9:1-17) 3. The shamelessness of Ham, the curse upon Canaan (9:18-29)
11
Genesis – The Structure – 6:9-8:22 We should not begin this section without noticing the end of the last: “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the L ORD.”
12
Genesis – The Structure – 6:9-8:22 As the entire world is about to be destroyed, hope is found in grace!
13
Genesis – The Structure – 6:9-22 The first section deals with the massive extent of sin and the preparation of the instrument of deliverance: the Ark.
14
Genesis – The Object of Grace – 6:9-10 Noah was a righteous man who walked uprightly.
15
Genesis – The Reason – 6:11-12 In contrast to some other accounts of the Flood, the Bible presents this as a moral judgment, not capricious (man was noisy!)
17
Genesis – The Object of Deliverance – 6:13-22 Only the Genesis account preserves a record of a sea worthy vessel.
18
Genesis – The Object of Deliverance – 6:13-22 It had three levels.
19
Genesis – The Object of Deliverance – 6:13-22 God’s deliverance involved Noah, his family (eight persons), and a representation of birds and land animals, along with food.
20
Genesis – Lessons– 6:9-22 This is a record of how bad the world had gotten and God’s reaction to it.
21
Genesis – Lessons– 6:9-22 God will meet massive sin with massive judgment.
22
Genesis – Lessons– 6:9-22 There are times judgment has to fall to give hope to others.
23
Genesis – Lessons– 6:9-22 The devastating judgment of the flood is used to caution people today. 2 Peter 3
24
1 Peter 3:18-19 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,
25
1 Peter 3:20 20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.
26
1 Peter 3:21-22 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us— baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.
27
I Peter 3:18-22 - Salvation The salvation discussed here is temporal, not eternal salvation. It is not about hell.
28
I Peter 3:18-22 - Salvation The baptism discussed here is not water baptism. The water here destroyed, it did not save.
29
I Peter 3:18-22 - Salvation The instrument of salvation was the ark, not the water.
30
I Peter 3:18-22 - Salvation The ark is a picture of the deliverance we can have today in Spirit baptism.
31
I Peter 3:18-22 - Salvation Just as God delivered Noah and his family from the wicked world around them, we can be saved from the wicked world around us.
32
I Peter 3:18-22 - Salvation When we tap into the Spirit’s power and our union with the risen Christ, we can be saved from the wicked world in which we live!
33
I Peter 3:18-22 - Salvation Like Noah, we can enjoy the benefit of God’s grace! 1 Peter 5:12
34
I Peter 3:18-22 - Salvation Hope is found in grace!
35
Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
36
Genesis – Lessons – 6:9-22 In the midst of judgment, Noah sailed into a better world.
37
Genesis – Lessons – 6:9-22 Noah’s faith helped to deliver his family into a better world, a better future.
38
Hebrews 11:7 Hope is found in grace.
39
Hebrews 11:7 And, like 1 Peter 3 teaches us, God’s grace encourages and enables us to inherit a better world...
40
Hebrews 11:7 …just like Noah.
