1 Firefighter’s View

2 Ken Haskell, a second-generation firefighter, has two brothers, Timmy and Tom, also New York City firefighters. Both Timmy and Tom were in the World Trade Center when the towers collapsed. Shortly after, Ken arrived at Ground Zero. He spent the next two months working at the Ground Zero site, trying to find the remains of people under the rubble, including his brothers. “That was a realization that set in very quickly for me,” he says. “The site had been reduced so that anything that wasn’t metal was reduced to ash or completely pulverized. …So the likelihood of anyone surviving was minimal.” He spent most of the next 48 hours sifting through the rubble, both South Tower and North Tower rubble because his brothers were in separate towers. Timmy’s body was found completely intact in the shell of the North Tower, but Tommy never was found. KEN HASKELL

3 For the FDNY member Steven Salzano, September 11, 2001 started out like an ordinary day. “When the first plane hit I told my wife everybody above is dead and not getting out. With the amount of fire in that building, every firemen knew that it was going to be a major operation.” While traveling to Manhattan on a bus, the first WTC tower already collapsed. By the time they got there, the second tower fell once they arrived. “When we got there you couldn’t see, even up to Chamber St. you couldn’t see. It was completely dark, you had about ten yards of visibility there, when we walked past Vessey street, everything cleared up.” When they got to the WTC, it was completely engulfed in fire. The effects of 9/11 have been detrimental to some of the firemen who survived the attack. “Everybody’s different; some guys became drunks and alcoholics, some guys had to get off the job, and other guys dealt with it.” STEVEN SALZANO
