The need for courage Courage – the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc. without fear, bravery. To act in accordance with one’s beliefs, especially in spite of criticism

The need for courage Biblical Courage – Boldness, confidence and bravery to speak up or stand up for one’s faith in the face of real or potential danger. Courage in evangelism – saying something to someone about your faith in less than an ideal situation, where you do not have complete or even reasonable control of the outcome

The need for courage Why we need courage The Bible tells us to be bold and courageous – 1 Cor. 16:13, Philippians 1:27-28 Because souls are lost – 2 Corinthians 5:10-11 To save yourself The gospel is worth defending

Courage in the Bible Daniel in his prayers – Daniel 6 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego – Daniel 3 David vs. Goliath – 1 Samuel 17 (17:45-46) Nathan and David – 2 Samuel 12 Stephen - Acts 7 Peter and John – Acts 4:13-22

Building courage Seek to please God rather than men – Hebrews 11:5, Galatians 1:10, Romans 8:31 Trust in His word – Romans 1:16, Hebrews 4:12

Building courage Don’t take rejection personally – Luke 10:16, 1 Thessalonian 4:8, 1 Peter 4:14-16 Pray about it – Acts 4:29-31 Ephesians 6:19-20 Hebrews 4:16

Building courage Become familiar with teaching resources – the more you study, the more confident you will be. PRACTICE with the materials you will use to teach others Be a godly example – Matthew 5:16, eventually your light will lead to conversations which can lead to teaching

Building courage Learn to love people and their souls – everyone will spend eternity somewhere. John 3:16, Rom. 5:8 1 John 4:18, perfect love casts out fear Begin with an indirect approach – leave tracts, bulletins or business card with your tip, or in appropriate places, etc.

Building courage Look for opportunities to share your faith – conversations, pray in public, read your Bible in public, etc. Ask if your friend, neighbor, is interested in studying the Bible – give them a specific tract, sermon outline, etc. Create opportunities to study – home studies, etc.

Building courage When possible take someone with you – it always helps when you are not alone – Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, Mark 6:7, Luke 10:1 Go with someone else who is teaching – cf. 2 Timothy 2:2

Building courage Get to work! Just do it! NOTE: The more you work at it, the easier it will become. The more you prepare and practice, the easier it will become – both to deal with setbacks and to avoid them.

Romans 13:11, “And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.”

2 Corinthians 6:1–2, “…Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
