9. SURPLICE Neckline that wraps forming a V- neckline in front or back. Introduced in the 1930’s by Manhattan couturier Claire McCardell.

10. CARDIGAN Jewel or V neckline that opens in the front, usually with buttons along center front. Originally associated with the Earl of Cardigan (1797-1868) and his officers in the Crimean War.

11. U-NECKLINE Medium-low in the front, rounded and the same width as the base of the neck. Earliest it’s been seen was in 14th century Italy.
