9 Week 3, Day 3 What is the theme question? Name the three theme vocabulary words and their meanings.

10 Dictionary and Glossary  Readers can use a dictionary or a glossary to find meanings of unfamiliar words.  Dictionaries and glossaries tell a word’s pronunciation, part of speech, and meaning.  Words are listed in alphabetical order.

11 Recall and Retell  Recalling and retelling the events in a story in the reader’s own words helps readers understand and remember what they read.  Use Theme Reader pages 100- 102 to recall and retell what was read.

12 Figurative Language  Figurative language is language that goes beyond the literal meaning of words by using interesting or unusual comparisons that appeal to the reader’s senses.  Examples – Was the water really “heaving and boiling” as the whales swam through it?  Are those words more effective or less effective than if the author had simple written “the water moved”?
