What is Big 6? What are the 6 stages?
The Big6 is a process model of how people of all ages solve an information problem. (Jansen 2009) This process encompasses six stages. Task Definition: Information Seeking Strategies: Location & Access: Use of Information: Synthesis: Evaluation:
4
Huh…Show me! Task Definition: What does that look like?
What do we need to do? Define the problem Identify the information needed
5
Show me more… Information Seeking Strategies What does that look like?
What can we use to find what we need? Determine all possible sources Select the best sources
6
More more… Location & Access What does that look like?
Where can we find what we need? Locate sources Find information within sources
7
Ohhh…I’m getting it Use of information What does that look like?
What information can we use? Engage (e.g., read, hear, view, touch) Extract needed information
8
There is more! Synthesis What does this look like?
How can we show what we learned? Organize Information Present the result
9
Last but not least Evaluation What does it look like?
How will we know if we did well? Judge the result (effectiveness) Judge the process (efficiency)
