Ch 5 Muscle Tissue Nervous Tissue
2
Three types of Muscle Tissue: Skeletal Smooth Cardiac Muscle tissues can CONTRACT when stimulated, thereby causing body movement
3
Skeletal Muscle Tissue Attached to bone Controlled consciously Thread-like cells are striated (light-dark) Cells are multinucleated Ex. All body muscle which allows movement

5
Smooth Muscle Tissue Involuntary Actions- not conscious Short, spindle shaped cells NOT striated Single nucleus/cell Ex. Walls of hollow organs (stomach, intestine, uterus, blood vessels, urinary bladder)

7
Cardiac Muscle Tissue ONLY in the Heart Involuntary movement Cells STRIATED and BRANCHING One nucleus/cell Cells joined end-to-end like boxcars –Intercalated disc=area where cells attach to each other
9
Nervous Tissue Brain Spinal Cord Peripheral Nerves Coordinate, Regulate and Integrate many body functions.
10
Nerve Cells (Neurons) Sense changes in their surroundings Transmit impulses along cytoplasmic extensions (processes) to: –Other neurons –Muscles –Glands
11
Neuroglial Cells Support & Bind Nervous Tissue Phagocytic Supply nutrients to Neurons (connecting neurons to blood supply)
13
Epithelial Membranes Epithelial tissue and Connective tissue that form sheet-like membranes that cover body surfaces and line body cavities (a type of ORGAN) Three types of Epithelial Membranes: Serous, Mucous, and Cutaneous
14
Serous Membranes: –Line cavities that lack openings to outside & cover their organs Thoracic Cavity Abdomenopelvic Cavity –Secretes serous fluid Lubricates surfaces
15
Mucous Membranes Lines Cavities and Tubes that OPEN to OUTSIDE of body Oral Cavity Nasal Cavity Digestive, Respiratory, Urinary and Reproductive Tubes
16
Cutaneous Membrane SKIN
17
Connective Tissue Membrane Synovial Membrane –Lines Joints
