Primary female sex organ Produce hormones the Estrogens Progesterone Ovarian Follicles (in ovarian cortex): Contain oocytes (immature sex cells) approx. 1 million present at birth each month adult females eject one oocyte from the ovary rupturing the follicle (ovulation) after ovulation the remains of the follicle form the hormone-secreting corpus luteum

form the beginning of the female duct system each tube is 10 cm long and extends from the ovary to the uterus fertilization occurs in the enlarged portion of the tube (ampulla) the tubes end in finger like projections (fimbriae) that drape over the ovary lined with ciliated cells to move oocyte or zygote towards uterus ectopic pregnancy embryo implants in the tube › naturally aborts › results in severe pain and considerable bleeding
