Inside Earth Chapter 5 Rocks
5.1 Classifying Rocks
2
5.1 Classifying Rocks Mineral Composition and Color
A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic solid, that has a crystal structure and a definite chemical composition. A rock is made of mixtures of minerals and other materials. Some rocks contain only a single mineral. Others contain several different minerals.

5.1 Classifying Rocks Learning Targets
I can use characteristics to identify rocks. I can identify the three main groups of rocks.

5.1 Classifying Rocks Target: I can use characteristics to identify rocks.
Two characteristics are: 1 Grain: size, shape, pattern (page 146) 2 Texture : smooth, glassy, chalky . Texture is described by the rocks grain size, pattern, and shape

5.1 Classifying Rocks Mineral Composition and Color
Most of the Earth’s crust is made up of Granite (light color, high silica, less dense) . Most of the Earth’s ocean floor is made up of Basalt (dark color, low silica, very dense)
