STAYING SAFE ONLINE Do Your Student Know… what it means to be on the Internet? what personal information consists of other than name, address, school, etc.? why they shouldn’t chat or friend strangers? not to believe everything they read on the Internet? how to respond to a cyber bully or something that makes them uncomfortable ? why they shouldn’t share their passwords even with their best friends?

WHAT TEACHERS SHOULD DO For the teacher: Do the planning first Make sure students know expectations and consequences Never log on for a student Have an objective Establish rules for which sites to visit Don’t assume our filter will catch everything Monitor, monitor, monitor!

FRIEND OR FOE? Do your students know : why they shouldn’t chat with strangers online? why they shouldn’t believe everything they read or see on the Internet? why they should never schedule an offline meeting with “online only” friends why they should tell their parents or teacher if anyone tries to meet with them offline Does this look like a 15-year-old girl on Facebook?

ENCOURAGE COMMUNICATION Do your students know: it’s not good to keep things bottled up? it’s OK to ask questions? why they should tell an adult if they run across anything that makes them feel uncomfortable?

WEBCAM SAFETY Do your students know: why they should never do webcam random chat? why they should only chat with family and friends? why they should never do anything on a webcam they wouldn’t want up on a screen in front of their classmates? why they should check with their parents before uploading video?

CONSIDER TIME AND PLACE Did you know: geolocation on social networks/games/cell phone pinpoint your exact location? Never check in at school, church, or any place you visit regularly how to check privacy settings Ask parents for permission before using any geolocation

BE “SCAM SMART” Be “Scam Smart” Don’t open strange emails Don’t click on a link in an email. Type in the url of the website yourself. Beware “free” downloads Don’t use P2P file sharing sites. Don’t be a pirate by downloading copyrighted music, tv shows, or movies

STAYING SAFE ONLINE Keep It in the Family Don’t share family photos without permission Ask before uploading

STAYING SAFE ONLINE Privacy? On the Web? All media is permanent All information is available If you don’t want people to know about it, don’t do it, and especially don’t do it online
