Definition of a Child - “every human being below the age of eighteen years” Article 1 of the UN's convention on the rights of a child UNICEF defines a child soldier as “ any person under 18 years of age who is part of any kind of regular or irregular armed force or armed group in any capacity” Estimated 500,000 in 85 countries worldwide 40% Girls 40 % in Africa Non State (Rebel Groups) and State Groups (Government recriuts)

The 'Use' of Child Soldiers Military Activities Fighters in active/direct combat operations Intelligence operations – Spying, Scouting, Decoys, Sabotage Protection and guard functions Special forces operations -Decoys Suicide missions, either as bombers or decoys. Although most were removed within a week of their arrival In Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom calls to raise the minimum recriutment age have been rejected on manpower grounds Fundamental Difference?
