1 Chapter 12 Section 4 Earth’s Moon

2 What are the different Features that cover the Moon’s Surface? Features on the moon’s surface includes Maria, Craters, and Highlands. Maria is the dark flat areas of the moon’s surface. Craters are large round pits on the surface of the moon. Highlands are the light-colored features that cover much of the moon’s surface.

3 Characteristics of the Moon The moon is dry and airless. Compared to Earth the moon is small and has large variations in its surface temperature. Moon’s Statistics: Period of rotation27 days, 8 hours Period of revolution27 days, 8 hours Diameter3,476 Km Density 3.34 g/cm3 Surface temperature -170 to 134 degrees Celsius Surface gravity17% of Earth

4 The Origin of the Moon About 4.5 billion years ago, when the solar system was still forming a planet size object collided with Earth. The collision was so violent that part of the Earth’s mantle blasted into orbit around the Earth the gravity caused this material to combine and eventually formed the moon.
