Muscles of the Calf, Thigh, and Hip
By: Mike Bazarnicki
2
Calf Muscles Plantaris Soleus Gastrocnemius
3
Plantaris Origin: Distal part of the lateral supracondylar line of femur and adjacent part of popliteal surface. Insertion: Posterior calcaneous Nerve: Tibial Function: Ankle plantar flexion
4
Soleus Origin: Posterior head of fibula, the middle third of the tibia
Insertion: Combines with gastroc tendon to insert on the posterior calcaneous Nerve: Tibial Function: Ankle plantar flexion
5
Gastrocnemius Origin: Posterior surface of the medial and lateral femoral condyles Insertion: Posteromedial part of the calcaneal tuberosity Nerve: Tibial Function: Ankle plantar flexion and knee flexion
6
Thigh Muscles Rectus Femoris Vastus Lateralis Vastus Medialis
Vastus Intermedius Semitendinosus Semimembranosus Biceps Femoris Hamstrings Quadriceps
7
Rectus Femoris Origin: Anterior inferior ilac spine
Insertion: Tibial tuberosity Nerve: Femoral Function: Knee extension and hip flexion
8
Vastus Lateralis Origin: Proximal intertrochanteric line, lateral lip of gluteal tuberosity, and the anterior and inferior border of the greater trochanter Insertion: Tibial tuberosity Nerve: Femoral Function: Knee Extension
9
Vastus Medialis Origin: Medial lip of linea aspera
Insertion: Tibial tuberoisty Nerve: Femoral Function: Knee extension
10
Vastus Intermedius Origin: Upper two thirds of femoral shaft
Insertion: Tibial tuberosity Nerve: Femoral Function: Knee Extension
11
Semitendinosus Origin: Ishial Tuberosity
Insertion: Proximal medial surface of the tibia Nerve: Sciatic Function: Knee flexion, internal rotation of the tibia, and assists with hip extension
12
Semimembranosus Orign: Ishial Tuberosity
Insertion: Posteromedial aspect of the medial tibial condyle Nerve: Sciatic Function: Knee flexion, internal rotation of the tibia at the knee, and assists with hip extension
13
Biceps Femoris Origin: Ishial tuberosity and the lower half of linea aspera’s lip Insertion: Lateral aspect of the fibular head, and the lateral tibial condyle Nerve: Sciatic Function: Knee flexion and external rotation and hip extension
14
Hip Muscles Sartorius Tensor Fascia Lata Psoas Major Iliacus
Gluteus Medius Gluteus Minimus Gluteus Maximus
15
Sartorius Origin: ASIS
Insertion: Proximal anteromedial aspect of the tibal condyle Nerve: Femoral Function: Hip flexion, abduction, external rotation, and knee flexion and medial rotation
16
Tensor Fascia Lata Origin: Iliac crest just posterior to the ASIS and the outer surface of the ASIS Insertion: IT band and into the knee Nerve: Superior gluteal Function: Hip flexion, abduction and internal rotation and assists with kne flexion
17
Psoas Major Origin: Transverse processes T12-L5
Insertion: Lesser trochanter of the femur Nerve: Lumbar plexus of L1-L4 Function: Hip flexion and external rotation
18
Iliacus Origin: Superior two thirds of the iliac fossa and the internal lip of the iliac crest Insertion: Lesser trochanter Nerve Femoral Function: Hip flexion, external rotation, and may assist with adduction
19
Gluteus Medius Origin: External surface of the ilium.
Insertion: Greater trochanter Nerve: Superior gluteal Function: Hip abduction, internal rotation, external rotation, flexion, and extension
20
Gluteus Minimus Origin: External surface of ilium
Insertion: Greater trochanter Nerve: Superior Gluteal Function: Hip abduction, internal rotation, and flexion
21
Gluteus Maximus Origin: Posterior gluteal line of ilium
Insertion: IT band and gluteal tuberosity Nerve: Inferior Gluteal Function: Hip extension, external rotation, abduction, and adduction
