After today YOU should be able to… – Identify parts of an ARC welder with 100% accuracy on a written quiz. – Recognize welding bead distortion caused by speed or amperage setting problems. – Compare and contrast the settings and usages of 6011 electrode and 7018 electrode with 100% accuracy on an oral quiz.

Just a few questions… What? - are the parts of an ARC welder? - are some characteristics of a good bead? - are the settings for a 6011 electrode and 7018 electrode? Why? - is it important to know the correct part names for an ARC welder? - would being able to diagnose the cause of a bad bead or weld be helpful? - would it be important to have your welder set correctly for different types of electrodes?

Terms SMAW- Shielded Metal Arc Welding – Where a weld is created from heat caused by an electrical arc between a consumable electrode and work metal Electrode- a bare metal rod coated in Flux Flux- a chemical compound that burns at high temperatures and forms a dome of protective gas around weld

Terms – Voltage is a measure of electrical pressure. Most welders operate on a 220 volt source. A welder changes or transforms the 220 volt pressure to a much lower pressure at the electrode, usually between 15 and 25 volts. – Amperage is a measure of electrical current flowing through a circuit Setting made on welder – Resistance is the opposition to the flow of current in a circuit. Causes heat – Duty cycle is the percentage of a 10 minute period that a welder can operate at a given current setting

Vs. A match can heat up tin foil, but has no chance at warming up a 1” solid steel plate – It’s the same with your welder Miller’s website http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/calcul ators/stick_amperage_calculator.php http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/calcul ators/stick_amperage_calculator.php
