Organisational purpose Provides out-of-school educational and personal development programmes for young people living in disadvantaged communities: -Midschool – early school leavers -Fast Tracks – college potentials -Afterschools – Social education -Leadership – building community leaders from within -Proven record of afterschools groups – Literacy, Pro- social, strong reputation among local schools IYF Transition Project

Midschool experience – the transition 2 groups: ◦ likely to disengage (20) ◦ average students (20) 15 month programme – Sept-Dec Exemplary model to be replicated Overlapping programmes – peer learning IYF Transition Project

◦ 2 Key staff – Teacher + Youth worker ◦ Transition year volunteers ◦ Funding from IYF ◦ Programme run out of Citywise Education ◦ Supported by local primary and secondary schools ◦ Local services utilised IYF Transition Project

◦ All participants in 6 th class initially then 1 st year ◦ Timetable structure in 6 th class Meet twice per week -3 hrs total Session 1: Talk/Homework/Learning activity/Fun Session 2: Talk/Non-academic, Sports/teamwork ◦ Timetable structure in 1 st year Meet once per week – 2 ½ hrs total – one group Talk + Homework support + non-academic activity IYF Transition Project

◦ Homework Remove friction (teachers and parents) Increased self-confidence (ability) Culture: Why H/W – positive peer group ◦ Changes in attitudes Intentify intellectual strengths – self-confidence and esteem Mentoring – manage emotions Mottos – good habits Empathy – group work ◦ Changes in behaviour Participation, Mentoring, Good habits, Positive peer group IYF Transition Project
