1 INTRODUCTION. Presently our’s is an ATM network, with cabletron SS2200/SS6000 edge switches, SS9000 ATM switches, cabletron Lane servers and cabletron SSR2000 IP Switch/Router.. We just could not manage the ATM network, and that is the reason we want to shift back to the good old Ethernet technology.. The maximum number of users in each sector/zone are as follows : 1. South Sector --- 100 2. East Sector --- 50 3. West Sector --- 25 4. North/Central --- 150. The IT Building in the North sector houses the “SAP Server”, the “Notes Server”, “the “Internet Proxy Server” and a few “Intranet Server”. The primary requirement of the our network is to provide the end users a connectivity to these servers. Nearly all of the network traffic consists of the packets exchanged between the end users and these servers.. As nearly 250 users are in different subnets than the subnet of the servers, all the traffic from these users to the servers are routed through the single 100 Mbps port of the router, the maximum average utilization of which is only around 4 to 5 Mbps.. There are hardly any network traffic (nearly zero) between the “South-East”, “East-West” and “South-West” sectors. The current normal maximum bandwidth utilization of the links from the “South”, “East” and “West” sector to the IT Router is only 4 to 5 Mbps.

3 MAIN FEATURES. ONLY ONE UPLINK SWITCH PER ZONE / SECTOR. DUAL GIGABIT UPLINK FROM EACH ZONE TO IT BUILDING LAYER3 IP SWITCH (ROUTER). ONLY ONE LAYER3 IP SWITCH (ROUTER) FOR THE ENTIRE NETWORK. IN THE ENTIRE NETWORK, CONFIGURATION REQUIRED IN ONLY 3 SWITCHES, viz. LLD SWITCH, IT BUILDING SWITCH and IT BUILDING LAYER3 IP SWITCH (ROUTER) (** LLD SWITCH supports 2 subnets. The corresponding VLANS viz. VLAN2 and VLAN6 has to be configured in the switch. ** ECR and NCR SWITCHES support only 1 subnet. The VLANS will be configured at the ROUTER end only. No configuration will be required on the individual uplink switches. ** THE IT BUILDING SWITCH supports 6 subnets. The corresponding VLANS viz. VLAN1, VLAN5,VLAN7,VLAN8,VLAN9 and VLAN10 has to be configured in the switch. ** THE IT BUILDING LAYER3 IP SWITCH (ROUTER) has to be configured for proper IP routing among the different VLANS. )

6 MAIN DIFFERENCE. LAYER3 IP SWITCH (ROUTER) changed to 24 port Ethernet 10/100/1000 with TWO GBIC uplinks. IT BUILDING LAYER2 Switch changed to 24 Port Ethernet 10/100/1000. EACH VLAN in the IT BUILDING Switch will be connected to a corresponding DEDICATED PORT in the IP Switch (Router). Each VLAN will have a dedicated uplink port to the IP Switch (Router).
