An Introduction to… Motion Photography There are 3 types of motion shots: Frozen Panned 3) Blurred
2
Frozen Motion: Frozen motion photography is a basic technique that suspends movement completely and keeps the moving subject in complete, or near complete, focus. This film photography technique requires a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion without blur. The faster the subject moves, the faster the shutter speed will need to be in order to suspend it completely.
3
Blurred Motion: Blur motion photography is a technique that purposely blurs any and all movement. This technique is achieved by using a long shutter speed to capture objects in motion.
4
Panned Motion: Panning is a motion photography technique that allows for the moving subject to be in focus while the background is blurred. The technique is slightly difficult to master and successfully pull-off, but after some practice it will become second nature. Like blur motion photography, panning uses a long shutter speed that can change depending on the amount of blur you wish to show.

Shutter Speed: • Located on the shutter speed dial, select Tv (shutter speed priority). • Relates to how long the shutter stays open. • Shutter speed numbers are in fractions of a second. • SS 1000 is considered fast because it is open for only 1/1000th of a second. • SS 4 is considered slow since it is open for ¼ of a second. • Which of these shutter speeds lets in more light? _____________ • Shutter speed will control what an object in motion will look like.

Taking Motion Photos Using a DSLR
Frozen Motion Blurred Motion Panned Motion What is in focus? Everything area not in motion area in motion What will the background look like? clear If moving will Blurry be blurry. What shutter speed will create this effect? or under (15) 60 Use a tripod? no yes yes What type of lighting bright bright low is ideal? ISO setting? , 200 Other info... If you want to capture Turn off flash. Follow a specific position, put The slower the subject your camera on subject is, the smooth continuous shutter slower the motion, and shutter speed mode. shutter speed follow through needs to be like a golf swing.

Taking motion photos with a ‘Point and Shoot’ Camera….
this is much more challenging than using a DSLR To Capture a Slow Speed (Blurred and Panned Motion) Use low ISO setting Take photos in dark lighting Use landscape mode To Capture a Fast Speed Use a mid ISO setting Use bright lighting Use portrait mode
