Agenda 9/30 wed Reminder Make sure your Classwork /Homework Packets are in Fill in Grade sheet due Friday Today: 1. Ch 3 notes Energy (keep due when the Ch. is done) 2. Sketch of Energy in action – half sheet Homework: Due Monday, Early Friday p.82 key terms Rw 1-12, Dq 1-10, Prob 1-7
3
OBJECTIVE: DISTINGUISH BETWEEN / CALCULATE THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF ENERGY STANDARD: PHYSICS Topic: Ch 3 Energy
4
1. Why must animals eat to stay alive? Energy can be released from 1 animal Plants have energy stored
5
2. Ch 3 Great Idea P.60 The many different forms of Energy are interchangeable, and the total amount of Energy in an isolated system Is conserved. “…Energy is Translated from 1 form to another… … never created or destroyed…”
6
3. The Great Chain of Energy Stored Energy - capacitor Mechanical Energy - motion Thermal Energy – heat Entropy Potential Energy - gravity
7
4. The great chain of Energy Stored Energy – Capacity to do work with the Energy available to the system Mechanical Energy - Motion, Interaction - Kinetic Thermal Energy – Heat or Particle excitement, Entropy Potential Energy v. Kinetic energy
8
5. Potential Energy v. Kinetic energy Potential Energy = m g h = mass (kg) gravity (m/s 2 ) height (m) kg m 2 /s 2 = Joules = Nm On a surface some height above the Earth you have potential energy. This energy is converted into Kinetic energy once your moving towards Earth. Does the P.E. increase or decrease when going up in an Elevator? Why? Increase PE, multipling
9
6. Potential Energy v. Kinetic energy Kinetic Energy = ½ mv 2 Joules As an object has Velocity or speed the Kinetic Energy Exists If all the energy was Potential and then the Object moved the Kinetic Energy would increase as the object speeds up and the potential Energy decreases. (clutch/gas) How is this change in P.E. v. K.E. like that of driving stick shift?

7.Work W = FD = Force (N) Displacement (m) or joules What’s a joule? As a force is applied by object 1 on object 2 a certain distance then…it is said Work was done. Some times when the force is applied the object moves but no work is done can you explain when? 90 degrees ? sitting

Agenda 10/2 Today: 1. Ch 3 notes Energy (keep due when the Ch. is done) Homework: Due Monday p.82 key terms Rw 1-12, Dq 1-10, Prob 1-7
13
8. Power Power = Energy / time units joules/ sec or watts J =Nm When paying an electrical bill you pay Kilowatt hours. Why does the Electric company change the units from watts to kilowatts? Why multiply by hours? 400,000 w or 400kw charge you more
14
9. Thermal Energy Heat is a description of temperature Temperature is a value for motion of molecules Entropy is how excited the molecules are Temp v. Entropy Copper with less impurities is more efficient
15
10. Wave Energy Light acts as a particle - laser Light acts like a wave – sunshine “particle-wave duality” E =mc 2 E = {ψ}
16
11. Trophic Level Fourth Level Top Level, Big Carnivores – Human, Shark Third Level [Under Big carnivores], Carnivores – lion, bear, cougar Second level, Herbivores, Giraffe, First level, Foundations level, Producers – fruit trees, flowers, … P.77
17
12. Conservation Law Energy = Potential energy + Kinetic Energy Never created nor destroyed just translated
18
13. First law of thermodynamics Aka, Conservation law Movement of heat occurs but the system doesn’t lose heat. You lose Heat but the atmosphere gains the energy. “Closed System” Sweating – Body is covered that means good evaporation
