Comments /questions a)How is GIS used in M&E? b)Doubled up legume technology has already been confirmed in Malawi, how are you synergizing with previous research? c)Integration is missing? (comment not clear) d)Crop-livestock integration? e)What changes do you want to see at the end of the program (major outcome)?

Comments /questions e)What changes do you want to see at the end of the program (major outcomes) f)In your presentation, you downplayed the role of demonstrations, explain why? – Comment: this was discussed in the context of farmers owning the trials/technology (co-learning with farmers). g)Potential for mechanized farming h)Integration of different work packages (Project Managers to discuss)

Use of GIS for M and E? All project farmers are geo-referenced, farmers can be tracked at any time for the M & E Soil mapping, carbon as an indicator of sustainability The role of remote sensing to track new lands being opened for agriculture from forests – we suspect there is no more land in project sites (Dedza and Ntcheu), for expansion of arable land (this should be verified)

Doubled up legume technology has already been confirmed in Malawi, how are you synergizing with previous research? In the AR, we are not introducing new technologies. We are working on technologies that works.

Crop-livestock integration Diversified forage sources – Given the emphasis on smallholder livestock production, there is need to look at diversified forage sources and not just shrubs (e.g legumes, grasses etc) in the fodder banks and by products from soybean processing. Include the monogastrics e.g. local poultry – contribute to HH food nutrition and incomes.

What changes do you want to see at the end of the program (major outcomes)? Outcomes: crop production and nutrition – Food security (crop production) – Nutrition security (proteins, calories) – Sustainable environmental management (sustainable intensification) Market participation (input/output markets) enhanced

Other questions/comments? Potential for mechanized farming? Producing ridges through ‘group owned or village level owned ’ equipment – not individual farmers buying equipment as this initial investment per farmer is prohibitive Include all players in the R4D platforms so that we get same messages to the farmers.

Integration How do we integrate the different sets of surveys data: (IFPRI, Wageningen) The results the surveys, how will this information be integrated? Can project activities be changed every time we get survey results? How would this impact on the M and E ?
