Enable readers to find and use data products Reproduce the results Use data to test new hypotheses; design new sample collections; or construct or evaluate models Practice analogous to journal article citations Makes research data a citable contribution to the scientific record Data citation indexes should be part of annual performance evaluations and Promotion and Tenure decisions Many scientists want citations to one of their peer-reviewed papers But that does not indicate the data used 4
