Today’s Sermon: Mark 11:11-21: “Impending Judgment Illustrated: Jesus Cleanses The Temple And Curses A Fig Tree” by Pastor Jim Bomkamp
2
Outline of today’s msg: 1. Up to this point in time, we have seen Jesus involved in one compassionate act after another, but today this changes. 2. Jesus sees a fig tree full in size and luxuriant in leaves but with no figs, and He curses it, prefiguring impending judgment against Israel. 3. Jesus goes to the temple and drives out the money- changers and people selling animals.
3
Mark 11:11: Jesus goes to the temple and looks around and then goes to Bethany
4
Mark 11:12-14 As Jesus heads with His disciples to Jerusalem the next day He sees a fruitless fig tree and curses it
5
J.D. Jones writes that there are two principles seen here concerning God’s disciplining and judging of men: 1. Atrophy. 2. Opportunity.
6
Mark 11:15-18: Jesus drives the money changers and those selling animals from the temple
7
Layout of Jewish temple:
8
What was sinful at the temple was really two-fold: 1. Men were making exorbitant profits. 2. The Court of the Gentiles was meant to be a place of worship for the nations.
9
S everal parables Jesus taught reveal judgment comes upon those who simply do nothing for God (fruitless), including: 1. Matthew 25:14-30, Talents. 2. Matthew 21:33-45, Vineyard Owner. 3. Luke 16:19-31, Rich Man and Lazarus. 4. John 15:1-6, Vine and Branches.
10
Mark 11:19-21: The fig tree has withered

CONCLUSIONS: 1. If Jesus were to return today, how much fruit would He see in your life? 2. As you are the temple of the Lord as His people, and thus are to be for His worship and praise, are you casting out the compromise and cover up of sin from your life? 3. Are you living every day of your life as if He might return today?
