2 ROOT: “DICT”  Definition: “say”  Example word: contradict-To go against or say the opposite.  Example Sentence: The “do not enter” sign was contradicted with an “enter Here” sign.

3 OTHER EXAMPLE WORDS FOR “DICT”  Dictator: a speaker who dictates to a secretary or a recording machine  Dictionary: a reference book containing an alphabetical list of words and how to say them  Diction: the articulation of speech  Dictation: an authoritative direction or instruction to do something  Predict: when you say what is going to happen even though it has not happened yet

4 “STRUCT”  Definition: to build  Example Word: Obstruction- a thing that impedes or prevents passage or progress; an obstacle or blockage.  Example Sentence: With the obstruction removed, water plunged down the creek bed, dragging debris with it.

5 “STRUCT” EXAMPLE WORDS  Construction : The act of bringing together all the elements of a building  Destructive: Tending to hinder; to destroy  Instructor: One who teaches; one who builds knowledge, a teacher  Structure: A building; an arrangement  Reconstruct: To build again

6 “GRESS”  Definition: to step  Example Word: Digress- to step away from the main topic; to step away from the topic and lose clarity; to wander in thoughts or ideas  Example Sentence: The student was digressing from her topic of dogs in her paper when she started to talk about fish.

7 “GRESS” EXAMPLE WORDS  Progression: a step-by-step sequence within a continuous series  Aggressive: hostile; pushy; stepping into someone's space with forceful energy  Regress: to go back; to move backward; to move a step back  Transgression: the violation of a law or a duty or moral principle  Egress: becoming apparent

8 “BIO”  Definition: Life  Example Word: Biodiversity- the range of different plant and animal life in a particular habitat (or in the world as a whole)  Example Sentence: One measure of the biodiversity of an area is the number of species found there.

9 “BIO” EXAMPLE WORDS  Biodegradable: capable of being disposed of via bacteria.  Amphibious: relating to or characteristic of animals of the class Amphibia  Symbiotic: A symbiotic relationship is one in which two organisms, organizations, or people intimately depend on each other, both acting to benefit the relationship.  Biology: the study of living things.  Biopsy: examination of tissues or liquids from the living body to determine the existence or cause of a disease
