When a number is multiplied by itself, the product is the square of the number. 3 3 3 x 3 = 9 3 2 = 9 A perfect square is a number that has two identical whole number factors.

The following is a list of perfect squares. 1 2 = 1 2 2 = 4 3 2 = 9 4 2 = 16 5 2 = 25 6 2 = 36 7 2 = 49 8 2 = 64 9 2 = 81 10 2 = 100 11 2 = 121 12 2 = 144

When the product of two identical factors is a second number, the factor is the square root of the number. Example: 36 has two identical factors, 6 x 6, so the square root of 36 = 6. We can also write square root using a radical sign:

How would you determine the approximate value of an area that does NOT equal a square? Example: What is ? We know it’s in between 2 and 3. Shade in 7 squares. Notice I have a square of 4, which has a root of 2, and then I have 3 out of the 5 left, shaded in, so my answer is.

Where would be on the number line below? 012345-5-4-3-2

Maurice bought tiles for his square kitchen floor. Each tile is 1 square foot. If the kitchen is 5 feet long by 5 feet wide, how many tiles does he need to cover the floor?

Mark has a square shaped tulip bed in his garden. The area of the bed is 400 square feet. mark wants to put a low border fence around the tulip bed. How much fencing will he need? We know area of a square is A=s², so something times itself equals 400.
