2. Source Cards Once you know the topic of your research paper, you can begin researching sources. Sources are where you are going to find all the information you need to write your research paper.

3. What’s a Source? A source can be online or print. Online sources are anything published digitally: web pages, PDF documents, ebooks, multimedia Print sources are anything published in print form and is widely available at libraries and bookstores: books, textbooks, newspapers, popular and scholarly journals, and magazines

4. Source Cards Source cards provide a handy place for you to record information about the sources you use in your research. Jotting down this information will make it easier to locate sources again and compile the works cited list later.

5. Where do I find Source Card info? Finding information for a source card is easy once you know where to look. Title pages and copyright pages of books, inside covers of magazines, and the book jackets are typical places to find source card information.

6. What information goes on the Source Card? This is what a source card MUST have: Remember, every line AFTER the first line is indented! Author’s last name, First name Middle initial. Title of Book: Subtitle. 1 st City of publication: Publisher, Year published. Medium.

7. Source Card For example: Snyder, Jamie L. Curse of the Freshman Zombie: The Horror of Room 42. Culver City: CCHS Books, 2012. Print.

8. Note Cards When you find good information from the sources, record it in note form on note cards. Note cards can help you organize information quickly and easily.

9. Note Cards Note cards MUST include: A label at the top that identifies the information on the card. Information from the source. Remember to include only ONE main idea per card. This can either be a direct quote or paraphrase. Source information, usually the author’s last name and the page numbers. You do not have to give complete source information on your note cards- save that for your source cards.

10. As you take notes, remember… WRITE LEGIBLY!! Use the correct form for identifying the source of information on each note card. AVOID PLAGIARISM!! Don’t copy sentences from a source without showing you are using a direct quote or paraphrase Organize your cards as you write them. Use paper clips or rubber bands to keep note cards with similar labels together.

11. Note Card For example, a notecard with a direct quote: Dedicated “Tony Hawk was skinny and tall for his age so it was hard for him to get the speed he needed to go up a ramp and get in the air. But he fixed his problem by creating his own style of skateboarding.” Smith 47

12. Note Card For example, a note card with paraphrase: Risk Taker He has had a dozen concussions, a broken elbow, a cracked skull, broken ribs, not to mention knocking out his two front teeth three times. Smith 33
