Thoughts… Conflict, cooperation, etc. Consolidation of power Nationalism Economics: broken windows theory Warfare does not GENERATE economic activity Economic activity is transferred from one area to another Trade barriers exist during war Trade expands after war People are exposed to products, technologies, etc that are not common in their areas
4
More Thoughts… Religious warfare Unifying religious cohorts Conversion? Why? The process of the “other” Oddly enough, people learn more about each other because they come into conflict Intellect Warfare technology converted to peaceful means after war Drive to create bigger, better, more effect weapons Improvements in travel technology Development of banking during crusades Exposure to ideas, books, learning, etc that Europe had forgotten during the Medeival Period
5
Final Thoughts… Geography Some areas that are easy to pass get more traffic and become more diverse as people move through, settle, etc. Hierarchy Cities along these travel routes become bigger Cities along these travel routes become centers of power Cities along these travel routes have more access to goods, services, etc. Cities along these travel routes also become more dangerous and take more damage Accessibility As armies try to travel from place to place, more roads and pathways are built New Technologies improve accessibility of areas Improved accessibility makes areas able to sustain larger populations and concentrates populations in those areas Improved accessibility improves trade Diffusion As people move they bring with them Knowledge Culture Ideas Disease People spread and become more unified and diverse at the same time. Complementarity- Various peoples become linked by trade, culture, and knowledge
