The Fabulous City of Timbuktu Timbuktu, Mali was the trade center of West Africa. Salt was so important for preserving food that West Africans gladly traded gold for North African salt. The west African leader, Mansa Musa, went on a pilgrimage to Mecca. When he returned, he brought along Arab scholars.
