Lesson Topic: From Nets to surface Area & Determining Surface Area of 3-Dimensional Figures Lesson Objective: I can… I can use nets to determine the surface area of 3- Dimensional figures. I can determine that a right rectangular prism has six faces: top & bottom, front & back, and two sides and determine that surface area is obtained by adding the areas of all the faces and develop the formula SA = 2lw + 2lh +2wh Develop and apply the formula for the surface area of a cube as SA = 6s2

Looking Ahead… Final Geometry Test Tomorrow – Study & Practice!!! Come in for tutoring tomorrow morning
3
Surface Area is… The area of all the faces added together, including the bases of a 3- Dimensional figure Units squared
5
Example 1: boxes are 1cm x 1cm
6
Example 2: Calculate the surface area, boxes are 1ft x 1ft
7
Example 3: Draw a net, complete table, Calculate the surface area
8
Lesson summary Now that we know the formula, we can use substitution to determine surface area without using a net
9
Lesson Summary, continued… After all faces are made into polygons, what can you say about the arrangement of those polygons? Describe the similarities between the nets of right rectangular prisms. Describe the similarities between the nets of pyramids How can you test your net to be sure that it is really a true net of the solid?
