VALUES - reflect your priorities “What do you think is important?”
Examples: strong family relationships, friendship, honesty

BELIEFS -thoughts and ideas you accept to be true -help you decide whether to accept or reject information

CULTURE -You can be part of… A family culture A community culture Or an organizational culture -Affects every aspect of your life and your communication

BIAS -A consistent attitude, viewpoint, or pattern of perception through which we view the world -Can be positive or negative -Result from personal experiences and cultural perspectives

PREJUDICE -A preconceived judgment (pre-judge)
-Based only on opinion, not on fact -Can present barriers to logical judgment and effective communication -Usually stem from negative emotions, such as… fear, hate, suspicion, and distrust

ATTITUDES -The way we choose to respond to various situations (either positive or negative) -Influences our perceptions, our decisions, and our communication with others

EXPECTATIONS -Basing a judgment on what you expect rather than on what actually happened -Examples: If a movie does not meet the promised made in its ads, you may be disappointed If a friend’s actions exceed your expectations, you may be delighted

KNOWLEDGE “Knowledge is Power”
What you know and what you do not know influence how you organize and interpret information The more knowledge you have, the better you can… understand information, process and filter ideas, make decisions and judgments, and communicate with others.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS If you do not understand the words other use, you cannot decode or interpret their messages as effectively. If you have not learned how to listen effectively, you may have difficulty acquiring the messages of others and organizing an interpreting them.
