1998; Detroit Good marriage – 2 sons Then Mark hurt his back; hooked on Vicodin, alcohol, gambling – couldn’t work Florence returned to work to pay off debts 2003 – family trip to a lake resort Both went to dock; Mark returned to cabin to put boys to bed MARK UNGER

15 minutes later, Florence not at dock Mark assumed she was with neighbors, so he went to bed Florence not back in morning Neighbors found Florence floating face down in water & called 911 May 2004 – Mark arrested & charged w/ premeditated murder

Passed a polygraph Lots of circumstantial evidence: - not told where body was found, but went straight there - packed car and left before body removed from water - sobbed, shed no tears

- Florence’s injuries (broken hip, internal injuries, fractured skull) show she fell on concrete before entering water & would have been unconscious - blood on concrete confirms this police suspect Florence was dragged into water, where she drowned believe Mark did it Convicted & sentenced to life in prison (no parole)

2001 Several Americans – anthrax infection – inhaled Breathe bacteria into lungs; fluid builds up in lungs and in sac around heart hard to breathe, organ failure News affiliate employees & postal workers affected ANTHRAX SCARE

5 people died after inhaling spores Little physical evidence, no fingerprints, no suspects, no motive US CDC – studied spores – found genetic mutations found in government lab Determined all letters came from same person – male w/ scientific background

Circumstantial evidence Bruce Ivins, US gov’t scientist who specializes in anthrax research Ivins committed suicide just before being arrested
