Hypothesis and Review
3
How to write a hypothesis! What are you going to test? (ASK A QUESTION) What is your IV? (what are you changing) What is your DV? (how are you measuring results) What do you think will happen? (testable statement) PUT IT ALL TOGETHER! If (write independent variable) is related to (write your dependent variable), then (describe what you think will happen).
4
Trasketball Five Teams I will ask a question (everyone should think of the answer) One group gets an opportunity to answer the question If they don’t get it, the next group will go until the answer is correct. You will get one point for a correct answer and an opportunity to shoot for bonus points
5
What is science? Science- a system of knowledge based on facts or principles
6
What is the Independent Variable? Will a freshwater fish survive in salt water? I will place 10 freshwater fish in salt water and place 10 freshwater fish in freshwater and see how many fish survive in those tanks. I think more freshwater fish will survive in freshwater. IV: type of water/adding salt to water Independent Variable: The part of the experiment that is manipulated or changed by the scientist or person performing the experiment.
7
What is the Dependent Variable? Will a freshwater fish survive in salt water? I will place 10 freshwater fish in salt water and place 10 freshwater fish in freshwater and see how many fish survive in those tanks. I think more freshwater fish will survive in freshwater. DV: Number of Fish that Survive Dependent Variable = The part of the experiment that is affected by the independent variable.
8
What is the Experimental Group? Will a freshwater fish survive in salt water? I will place 10 freshwater fish in salt water and place 10 freshwater fish in freshwater and see how many fish survive in those tanks. I think more freshwater fish will survive in freshwater. Experimental: Fish in Salt Water Tank Group that the independent variable is applied to.
9
What is the Control Group? Will a freshwater fish survive in salt water? I will place 10 freshwater fish in salt water and place 10 freshwater fish in freshwater and see how many fish survive in those tanks. I think more freshwater fish will survive in freshwater. Control: Fish in Freshwater Tank Control = A part of the experiment that is not being tested and is used for comparison.
10
What is the formalized hypothesis? Will a freshwater fish survive in salt water? I will place 10 freshwater fish in salt water and place 10 freshwater fish in freshwater and see how many fish survive in those tanks. I think more freshwater fish will survive in freshwater. If the number of freshwater fish that survive is related to the amount of salt in the tank, then more freshwater fish will survive if there is less salt in the water.
11
What are the 6 steps of the scientific method?
12
Why is no experiment a failure? We are always learning from their experiment even if we didn’t get the results we wanted. Go back and make a new hypothesis if your old one was incorrect.
13
What is a theory? A scientific theory explanation of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through scientific method Example: Biology: cell theory, theory of evolution Physics: Big Bang theory Earth: plate tectonics theory
14
How is a law different? A scientific law is a statement based on repeated experimental observation that describes some aspect of the world. A scientific law always applies under the same conditions, and implies that there is a relationship Sun sets in the west Law of Gravity
15
What is a microscope? Used to view small specimens
16
What is a Bunsen burner? Use to heat objects in a lab
17
What is a Petri dish? Used to grow bacteria in or used as a biological dish
18
What is this? Beaker
19
What is this? Thermometer
20
What is a branch of biological science? – Botany- study of plants – Zoology- study of animals – Ecology- study of nature – Medicine and Agriculture
21
What is a branch of physical science? – Chemistry- study of matter and changes – Physics- study of forces and energy
22
What is a branch of earth science? – Geology- study of the history of the Earth – Meteorology- study of the atmosphere and weather
23
What is technology? Technology- the application of science to meet human needs
24
Final Question: What # of points does your group want to risk? 1. Ask a Question: Do plants grow better in the light or the dark? List the remaining steps of the scientific method and describe how you would set up and carry out the experiment. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Final Question: What # of points does your group want to risk? 1. Ask a Question: Do plants grow better in the light or the dark? List the remaining steps of the scientific method and describe how you would set up and carry out the experiment. 2. Background Research about plants 3. Hypothesis : If plant growth is related to the presence of light then plants will grow more when exposed to more light. 4.Experiment: IV: amount of light DV: Amount of Growth in cm Place 10 plants in the dark (experimental group) and place 10 plants in the light (control group). Measure the growth in 10 days. 5. Data Analysis: Compare the growth of the plants by finding average and graphing data. Conclusion: (need data) 6. Share and Report Data
