How to Write a Lab Report Title – descriptive; your name, partners name, teachers name, class code(SNC2D) & date Purpose/Question – what the goal of the lab is, what you want to figure out. Hypothesis – If….then…. Statement for what you expect to happen. It should also included a because with reasons for why. Variables – independent variable, dependent variable & control variables Safety – precautions that need to be taken during the experiment with explanations for what to do if it does happen/go wrong. Materials Method/Procedure – IN PAST TENSE – should be what YOU did. NO PERSONAL TENSE. Observations – in a data table. Both QUALITATIVE & QUANTITATIVE Discussion – summarize then analyze your results, give sources of error, give any improvements that could be made for when you did it next time, and then state your conclusion.

What is Science? Asking questions; being curious The effort to discover, understand, or better understand how the natural world works. Anytime you ask the question ‘why’ or ‘how’ or ‘I wonder…’, you are being a scientist!

The Scientific Method A ‘procedure’ that a scientist will follow to discover facts about the natural world. All starts with a QUESTION. Not a simple yes or no question. RESEARCH – what have other scientists discovered? You try to find out as much information as you can about your topic. Hypothesis Plan your experiment, gather your materials (PROCEDURE & MATERIALS LIST) Conduct your experiment – record your OBSERVATIONS ANALYZE your results ***SO IMPORTANT – Looking for patterns and trying to relate your knowledge to explain what you found out. CONCLUSIONS – compare to your hypothesis. Is it correct or incorrect? REPEAT the process Publish – communicate your results
