Music Therapy: A Brief History armusictherapy.com The earliest known writings of the use of music as a healing influence were written during the time of Aristotle and Plato. After WWI, musicians began playing music in hospital settings for veterans. The first Music Therapy Degree Program was founded at Michigan State University in 1944. The National Association of Music Therapy (NAMT) was founded in New York on June 2, 1950.

Music Therapy: A Brief History armusictherapy.com The American Association of Music Therapy (AAMT) was established in 1971. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) was formed in 1998 as a merger between NAMT and AAMT. AMTA is the largest Music Therapy Association in the world, representing Music Therapists in the United States and over 30 countries around the globe.

Music therapists are required to have competencies in three main areas: 1.musical foundations 2.clinical foundations 3.music therapy foundations and principles A bachelor's degree also requires 1200 hours of clinical training including a supervised internship. armusictherapy.com Upon completion of the bachelor's degree, music therapists are eligible to sit for the National Board Certification Exam to obtain the credential MT-BC (Music Therapist - Board Certified) which is necessary for professional practice.
