Chapter 8 Spreadsheets

Examining Spreadsheets  Basic Functions Performing Calculations Sorting Data Selecting Data Creating Graphs and Charts

Use Spreadsheets to Achieve ISTE NETS for Students  Creativity and Innovation: Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.  Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.  Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making: Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.  Technology Operations and Concepts: Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems and operations.

Using Spreadsheets for Learning  Creating Simulations- teachers and students can create a simulation that demonstrates manipulation of one or more variables using a spreadsheet.  Creating Discovery Spreadsheets- allows students to manipulate variables and discover rules and laws.  Exploring Math Concepts and Rules- lets students explore mathematics relationships.  Solving Problems- students use a spreadsheet to solve a specific problem.

Planning an NTeQ Lesson for Spreadsheets  Matching Objective to Computer Functions- the objectives must match the functions of spreadsheet or else use something else (ex. Manipulation of numbers or data, creation of charts and graphs, and interpretation)  Specifying a Problem- problem statements should be relevant, worthy of solving and utilize spreadsheet in solving (p. 220-221) Cont’d

Planning an NTeQ Lesson for Spreadsheets  Research and Analysis- instructor needs to determine if students will collect data or if data will be given to them; then they need to have a detailed plan of how students will manipulate data for example: Will students be multiplying certain areas? Will students be finding the best interest rate? Will they need to display the data in a graph or chart?  Results Presentation- most will be either numbers in spreadsheet or graph/chart

Multidimensional Activities  Activities During Computer Use- this involves determining whether or not the students will actually enter the numbers and formulas on their own or use a template you create  Activities Before Computer Use- again, the main thing here is efficiency and effective use of time (ex. You may give them a sheet that allows them to set up the spreadsheet on paper before going to the computer to help collect thoughts and save time) Con’t

Multidimensional Activities  Activities After Computer Use- This section may contain a Think Sheet which directs the students to certain parts of the spreadsheet results; could also be a guidance time for instructor to help students interpret their results

Assessment  Rubrics should stress spreadsheet applications (ex. Entering data, enter formulas, presentation of data, utilization of charts, explanation of results, etc.)
