WHAT IS L&P L&P is short for Lemon and Paeroa. L&P is New Zealand’s favourite soft drink. L&P was invented in 1904 after a man tasted some mineral water near Paeroa and mixed it with lemon to make a particularly refreshing drink. It’s loved by Kiwis everywhere and is still NZ’s most famous soft drink.

L&P History The first people to discover L&P was a writer and his friend who struck upon the happy idea of taking a lemon in their pocket and adding lemon juice to the mineral water they found.

The famous spring water is on a block of land on Junction Road. The land was first owned, in April, 1887, by James Coote, hotel-keeper and Alexander Hogg, store-keeper, both from Paeroa.

In August the same year the property was subdivided, the spring hole with 13 acres was transferred to John Logan Campbell, later Sir John Logan Campbell, the father of Auckland.

By 1896 timber merchant James McAndrew purchased the property and turned it into a timber sawmill on the Hape Creek, close to the spring.

How has L&P impacted New Zealand's identity L&P is New Zealand in a bottle when some one is talking about New Zealand they always bring up L&P. L&P is a key factor to New Zealand with out it we would just be known as the country next to Australia.
