In the Election of 1824 4 candidates ran for office. ◦Candidates had differing opinions on the role of the federal government. ◦They also spoke for different parts of the United States or sections of the U.S. (Sectionalism)

The Election ◦Andrew Jackson received the largest number of popular votes, but no one received a majority of the electoral votes. Under the 12 th Amendment to the Constitution, if no candidate receives the majority, the House will choose the president.

They make the deal. Henry Clay has a secret, D.L. meeting with Adams. Tells him that if he appoints him Sect. of State he would tell all of his supporters in the House to vote for Adams.

Jackson and his followers accuse the two men of stealing the election by making a corrupt bargain. John Quincy Adams wins and Henry Clay becomes Sect. of State.

Adams as President ◦The Corrupt Bargain casts an ugly shadow over Adam’s presidency. ◦Adams policies ran against public opinion. He wanted a stronger navy, and government. Allocated government funds towards scientific expeditions.
