What is Adolescence? The period between the normal onset of puberty and the beginning of adulthood; from about 12 to 19 in the U.S. Puberty is the physical maturing that makes an individual capable of sexual reproduction- occurs at different times in different places

The Concept of Adolescence Not universal- some societies go from childhood to adulthood after “puberty rites”- formal ceremonies Adolescence as a life stage is recent in U.S. history

Emergence of Adolescence in the United States Prior to 1860s No separate life stage of adolescence; Children treated as small adults EDUCATION Children in school longer; extends period of dependence WORK Laws restrict child labor; also increases length of dependency EFFECT Development of adolescence as a distinct life stage between childhood and adulthood COURTS Juvenile-justice system legally distinguishes Between youth and adults

In what ways do we grow and develop in adolescence? Spurts in height and weight Change in body proportions Sexual characteristics Complexion problems- 40% seek medical treatment for acne Changes may cause embarrassment and/or anxiety

How may you be confused or unsure of your status during adolescence? Expectations are not as clear as they are for children and adults Some adults are accepting of teen ways and even adopt them; others are critical Mixed messages

What decisions are adolescents faced with? School- course selection Sports & extracurricular choices Plans after high school Decisions may have little long-term consequences, or a tremendous impact on an adolescent’s life

What kind of pressures do adolescents experience? Parents Friends Peers Romantic relationships Jobs

How do adolescents search for a sense of self? Figure out what is important Establish personal norms Set life priorities Prepare for future roles Anticipatory Socialization- learning the rights, obligations, and expectations of a role to prepare for assuming that role in the future (Ex.: job, dating, clubs)
